PROPRIETARY NAME AND DOSAGE FORM
F10 GERMICIDAL WOUND SPRAY WITH INSECTICIDE (Liquid, use as is, in 100ml, 500 ml with trigger spray and 5 litre jerry cans. Available in natural clear solution and with a red water solutable dye)
REGISTRATION NO G3818 Act 36/1947
COMPOSITION
Quaternary ammonium compound ………………. 4,0g/L
Cypermethrin ………………………………………………….. 2,5g/L
INDICATIONS
A topical application spot treatment spray as an antiseptic and long-acting barrier to infection. For use in open wound sites caused by e.g. trauma, muelsing, castration, de-budding and de-horning. Also for abscesses, foot rot, dart wounds, de-gloving injuries as well as over closure sites.
It incorporates an insecticide to repel insects such as biting (sweet itch) and ticks. It is effective to eliminate infestation due to fly strike (the larvae migrate out of the wound without the need for mechanical elimination) whilst at the same time creating an effective antiseptic barrier and effective repellent to further fly strikes.
APPLICATION
Field trials took place over 2 years and included over 8000 animals across many species covering production animals including cattle, sheep goats, ostriches, companion animals including dogs and horses, exotics including rabbits, guinea pigs, tortoises, hedgehogs, birds of prey and wildlife species including Bactrian Camel, Leopard Tortoise, Black and White rhino, Bushbuck, Blue Duiker, Mona monkey, Pygmy hippo, Axis deer, Red duiker, Arabian oryx, Scimitar horned oryx, Eland, Waterbuck, Cape buffalo, Fallow deer, Cape vulture, Nyala, Polar Bear, Mandrill, Ducks and Sitatunga, large cats including lions, tigers, cheetah and snow leopard.
The product has demonstrated good long acting antimicrobial action, in excess of 10 days on both open wounds and primary closure sites which were maintained free of insects during the healing period due to the insecticidal action. It was also found to be effective in the treatment of wound infestations due to fly strike.
This product is water soluble and can be rinsed with clear water.
ANTIMICROBIAL ACTION
The antimicrobial action of the product is based upon core actives of the F10 compound as used in other F10 antiseptic and disinfectant products. At the concentrations in this product, the efficacy achieved is >log5 (100 000 times) reduction in microbial counts against gram positive and gram negative bacteria, as well as fungi, yeast and moulds. F10 has proven virucidal effectiveness against both enveloped and non-enveloped viruses.
INSECTICIDAL ACTION
The insecticidal action is based upon cypermethrin (a pyrethroid) and aided by piperonyl butoxide. In the testing phases the indicator species used was Lucilia cuprina, a commonly occurring blow fly species. As soon as the larvae were sprayed they immediately began to migrate from the test site and within 30 minutes were dead. Other tests on L. cuprina eggs resulted in a 100% kill. The product was equally effective against adult flies and showed a 77% kill in 15 minutes rising to 100% within 30 minutes.
Cypermethrin is a broad spectrum insecticide and is effective against other insects, e.g. biting flies, fleas, mosquitoes, and ticks.
RESIDUAL ACTION
Residual action tests showed the product was 100% effective after 5 days. Extended field trials demonstrated that the residual action extended well beyond 2 weeks. However the product is water soluble and should be re-applied if the animal has been washed or exposed to heavy rain.
TOXICOLOGY
These studies were carried out in accordance with the test requirements as specified by the EPA. All studies were subject to an independent GLP compliance audit.
